About Jan
Jan King is a personal performance and life transitions coach. She loves working with any kind of life transition, but she specialises in separation & divorce and also in later life matters. Yes, there’s a link – the number of people getting divorced over fifty years of age is on the increase as people live longer and reach for another chance of happiness before it’s too late.
Divorce coaching is a short term way of working that supports you while you reflect on your situation. It gives you time to think, to prioritise and to make realistic, well thought-through plans for your future. The benefits can’t be underestimated. They include greater clarity, greater peace of mind and the courage to face the future and build a new life for yourself.
Topics include:
• Looking after myself
• Making sure my children are OK
• Being a parent with my ex-partner
• Moving on from the past
• Planning my future
• Living within my means
• Making new friends
• Keeping up with old friends
• Finding myself again
• Rebuilding my confidence
As well as working with individuals facing separation and divorce, Jan also works with couples.
Later life matters include separation and divorce, retirement planning, later life crises, succession planning for family businesses, serious illness, children leaving (and returning) home, bereavement, eldercare planning and downsizing.
Jan says, ‘I work with people going through life transitions because I’ve been through quite a few myself. I’m the child of a blended family, I’ve changed careers, been through separation and divorce, remarried, weathered a serious illness, retired and invented a new life for myself, and I know what it can be like when someone you love dies. So I understand what it’s like to be facing a major life change, and I have a sense of what you might be going through. That helps me to help you, so do get in touch if you’d like to talk.
Experience
Jan originally trained as a social worker at Brunel University and went on to specialise in childcare in both Essex and in London. It soon became clear to her that she couldn’t help families and children effectively without additional skills, so she followed up her social work training with a Diploma in family systems therapy at the Institute of Family Therapy in London. Her family systems training allowed her to be aware of, and to facilitate changes in, habitual patterns of communication and behaviour that commonly lead to difficulties between couples and between family members. Jan subsequently qualified as a personal performance coach and as a corporate coach, and she now works privately, offering life transitions coaching to those facing major life changes like separation and divorce and retirement.
Jan’s way of working combines her skills as a family systems therapist and her skills as a coach. As a coach working both with individuals and also with couples, she knows the importance of achieving personal goals and of having professional support in doing so. But she also understands the importance of self-discovery and self-motivation, and she uses powerful coaching techniques to encourage you to think things through and to put in place plans that are uniquely right for you.
